Looking for a studio for rent in Den Haag? Excellent choice! It’s a wonderful city to live in!
The Hague is the only large city in the Netherlands that is located at the sea. There is super convenient public transport between the beach (which is no less than 11 kilometers long!) and the historic city centre.
History and sea combined, we understand why you want to find your new place here!
However, you should be warned that it will not be an easy search, because you are not the only one who wants to live here.
The Hague is the place to be if you love to live comfortably and centrally.
Due to its central location, you’ll get to other large cities in the Netherlands in no time. You can easily reach Delft, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Amsterdam via the highways A44, A4, and A12. The train connections to Leiden, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht are also excellent.
In terms of housing, you can find diverse types of studio apartments in The Hague, from characteristic studios in the city centre or studios with a view of the quays.
The rental property market in The Hague is very similar to Amsterdam's in the sense that there are more people searching for a place to rent than there are actual places available.
The waiting list for social housing has risen to almost 7 years, while rental housing in the free sector is unaffordable for many people.
The Hague is fully engaged in building new apartments and making affordable housing available; for example, 4000 homes are added every year. In addition, the municipality has imposed all kinds of restrictions to ensure that more homes remain on the market (such as limiting Airbnbs).
If your annual income falls below the maximum limit, you are eligible for social housing. The problem, however, is that you have to sign up years in advance and get on the waiting list. If you didn't do this or if you earn too much, you should look for a studio in The Hague in the free sector.
This means that a housing agency or private individual rents out a studio and that you will have to meet certain conditions to be allowed to rent the studio. You can assume that the rental price of the studio in The Hague will be higher than €763.47.
If you earn less than €60,036 per year as a single person, you can rent a medium-priced private home in The Hague. These homes cost between €752 and €988 per month. You need to get a permit from the municipality for this!
If you earn more than that, you will also pay more for your studio or apartment in The Hague.
If you are looking for a studio, you can rent it bare (without any decoration), upholstered (including curtains and flooring), or furnished (ready to move in).
Rents in The Hague have risen sharply in the past year: from €12-17/m² in the summer of 2021 to €15-21/m² in the summer of 2022. The average rent in The Hague is currently €17.10/m² ( source: omroepwest.nl [30/7/22]).
If you are looking for a studio for rent in The Hague, you will easily pay €900 or more for an area of up to 30m².
You are looking for the nicest neighbourhoods to live in in The Hague. Super! Each neighbourhood has its own character, from quiet residential areas to hip, urban districts.
In multicultural The Hague, you can find 8 districts: Centrum, Escamp, Haagse Hout, Laak, Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, Loosduinen, Scheveningen, and Segbroek.
For many people, the Centre of The Hague is the cream of the crop. And we understand why. Here you will find some popular neighbourhoods such as Binnenhof and Chinatown, and everything you need is within walking distance.
If you are in the city centre, there's always something to do. For a more leisurely day: take a stroll down one of the winding streets, sit and people watch at Het Plein or enjoy a concert at Malieveld. And if you need some time to relax and recharge, don't worry--there are plenty of options for that too. There are numerous public courtyards that provide a green space in the middle of the city (perfect for picnics!), but Paleistuin or Haagse Bos are great choices if you're looking to get closer to nature.
If you would like to live right on the beach, Scheveningen is an excellent choice. The beach, the sea, and the dunes are all within walking distance. Scheveningen-Dorp still has that real fishermen’s village feeling. In Scheveningen-Haven you will find newly built apartments with a beautiful view over the various ports. And Scheveningen-Bad is the tourist centre with a pleasant boulevard on the water and numerous beach bars. If you’re looking for a permanent holiday vibe, this is it!
The Escamp district might not be at the top of your list, but it is more affordable than other areas. So if you're looking to save some money, you could find your new home in Escamp!
There are definitely some nice places to live, such as Leyenburg and Bouwlust/Vrederust.
Leyenburg is a quiet residential area, adjacent to the Zuiderpark. In Leyenburg you can find the Florence Nightingale Park with allotments and a petting zoo. You will mainly find apartments and studios here. The nearby Zuiderpark is a green lung in the district. You can enjoy the greenery, but also do sports or have a barbecue.
Bouwlust/Vrederust is also a quiet, green neighborhood where you can relax. The district is located on the edge of The Hague and borders a large recreational area, Den Uithof. You will mainly find social rental apartments here.
Haagse Hout consists of 4 districts. Some of these, such as Marlot, are luxurious neighborhoods with larger homes. But Mariahoeve, for example, is an excellent place to look if you want to rent a studio in The Hague. In this spacious-feeling district, greenery alternates with single-family homes, low-rise flats, and high-rise flats.
In Bezuidenhout, you will discover a large number of flats and studios. It is a densely inhabited region with limited space for nature, but it is just minutes from the city center and Haagse Bos.
You can still find affordable studios in Haagse Hout.
If you want a studio in the social sector in The Hague, you must register on Woningnet. For those searching for a free sector studio, take a look at the selection available at rental offices. It is important to be quick when you find a suitable home, so register on Stekkies and receive new studios directly in your mailbox.
A studio in the free sector costs an average of about €900 per month. In some neighbourhoods such as Bezuidenhout, Mariahoeve, and Leyenburg you can still find cheaper ones. In other neighbourhoods such as the Centre and Scheveningen, that amount will increase slightly.
